iPhone 3G!
iPhone 3G!
To echo the new iPhone commercial, it's finally here.
Yes, the 3G iPhone has finally arrived. Well, technically, it arrives next month (July 11th). And as I'm sure you've heard, it's coming with a much lower price tag: $199 for the 8GB and $299 for the 16GB. Oh, yeah!
First, let's talk 3G. Speeds that are 2.8x faster than the current EDGE network and that are approaching Wi-Fi speeds. "Zippy," Jobs called it. During today's keynote, a very "complex" website was clocked simultaneously for Wi-Fi, 3G, and EDGE. The results had Wi-Fi coming in at 17 seconds, 3G at 21 seconds and EDGE in at an embarrassing 59 seconds. Yes, on detailed sites, EDGE is that bad.
How about the aesthetics? The spy photos that were leaked earlier this spring surprisingly turned out to be correct. A black, glossy plastic is the new backing, as well as an optional white version for the 16GB model. (I'm definitely partial to the black.) As for the front, it's identical to the first gen. model, which in my opinion is a very good thing. How could you touch that front?
In addition to the slew of applications that will be available through a brand new App Store (games to eBay widgets), the new iPhone will have true GPS with tracking capabilities! So now you can see where you are going on the map as you move.
One prediction that didn't make it into the new iPhone was the rumor of an additional camera for iChat video capabilities. This is kind of a bummer. I was really looking forward to mobile video chats, although it was always a stretch in my mind, even for Apple.
As planned, you can count on me being in line on July 11th for the new model. (And Lori is already ecstatic that she will be getting my iPhone).
